Early Years

EYFS Vision Statement

At St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School we want children to be happy, confident, well-rounded individuals with a love for learning. Our aim within Early Years Foundation Stage is to give children a strong foundation to grow, explore and achieve as learners, and we want them to feel happy, safe and secure, in an enabling environment where everyone is valued and respected.

We are committed to developing positive relationships, where children’s well-being is paramount. We celebrate the uniqueness of each child, recognising they all learn and develop in different ways, at different rates and bring diverse experiences to our school. We want children to feel nurtured and to know that they have a voice. We also value Parents/Carers voice by working in close partnership with families as they know their child the best. In the EYFS we ensure that the opportunities we provide are inclusive for all, and we believe that every child has the right to achieve their full potential.

We ensure that the curriculum we deliver is interesting, creative and motivational. We believe that high level engagement ensures high level attainment. Our curriculum builds on each individual’s needs and interests and enables children to achieve their next steps in all areas of learning. We ensure that the continuous provision and learning environment is engaging, challenging and provides children with opportunities to be independent as well as to collaborate with others. We value the importance of children learning through play and the need for first-hand experiences. We believe learning should be fun, engaging and suitably challenging and know that risk and challenge are vital in order for children to develop resilience and perseverance. We provide an objective-led curriculum that develops children’s skills, knowledge and understanding in all areas of learning. We strive to have a balance between adult-led and child-initiated learning, alongside high-quality adult-child interactions.

At St John’s we recognise that oracy and developing language not only improves academic outcomes but are life skills which will ensure success beyond school. As such, we screen all children’s speech and language on entry and offer skilled support and interventions from the outset to ensure barriers to learning and communication are addressed effectively.

We have high aspirations for children and encourage them to have high expectations of themselves. We are committed to providing the best possible start to school life for each child, teaching them skills and giving them experiences which will ensure their well-being now and success in the future.
